Is a doctor legally able to collect on a missed appt fee

Ive seen lots of questions, but not this specific one: if you miss an appointment, and get charged the fee, does the law permit a doctor to collect, as it would, say, when you sign papers for a car loan? With what legal basis could a collections agency harm your credit report?
Answer1:This is a common problem beginning to show up. Companies are beginning to invoke fees like this. However, as long as a sign has posted in common view in the doctors office, in paperwork you signed when you began going to that doctor, and/or communicated to you, you can be held liable for this charge... A collection agency can pick up the charge and most likely will, depending on the amount. Yes, it can go on your credit and will cause your credit score to drop significantly. One other caveat though.. Depending on the state, this practice may not be allowed.. However, most states do not afford consumers this protection.Hope that helps.. feel free to e-mail if any questions..
